Discussion:
[Pearpc-devel] Anything on 0.4?

There was talk a while back about 0.4's release.... But it seems to have
completely gone down the pan. Is *anything* going to happen? And what's
the status of OpenBIOS? That disappeared down the pan too.

I don't mean to be pushing you around or anything, it's just the PearPC
community (I'm a staff member at PearPC.net) are getting on my nerves
saying 'Where's 0.4???!?!?' all the time. So a little status update
would be nice.

Thanks

Sorry, Sebastian and Jens have been extremely busy, and I've just kind
of been too lazy to start up into Linux to integrate in the patches
that we're looking to include before the 0.4 official release.

But functionally just as before, there's not going to be any
difference between the 0.4 official release, and a 0.4pre release
that's available right now with the patches that we want to include
(like 2nd ATA controller).

What's in a name? 0.4 by any other name (specifically 0.4pre) is just
a name. We could turn around and make a build right now from 0.4pre
and call it 0.4, it wouldn't really change anything.

We still want to go forward and push out an official 0.4, but
Sebastian's time seems to be being spent elsewhere, and likely that
he's finishing up his studies, there's ample reasoning to support this
idea.

In some ways it's frustrating that people get so worked up over a
name, and an official stamp... it's not like the PearPC team has a
rigorous testing harness to verify our code or anything... so reall,
the only difference between the pre's out there and the eventual 0.4
is just us saying, "hey, let's call it 0.4 now, instead of just
0.4pre."

Although, I do understand your frustration in fielding these questions so often.

So, then let's make the 0.4 release.

I created the "ppc_0_4_branch" CVS-branch, so all patches should got
into mainline and this branch until release.

Please send me (or others with CVS access) pointers to important patches
and I'll happily apply them. Well, as long as they don't break other
things. Since I don't have really time for long testing and QA, we make
release a "release candidat" first, so that the 0.4 won't get less
stable than all 0.4pre builds.

I agree, although I don't know anything about programming and the

Do you know anything on the status of the OpenBIOS guys?

I've looked through the patch list, and I've picked out the most used
ones:

* CRC32 patch
* Network scripts patch
* Sparse disk support
* Sad Mac (to make crashes that slight bit more user friendly ;))
* 2nd IDE controller
* Change CD fix for win32

I could also create (if you wish) a new ppc_img file for use in PROM.

Last time I heard of OpenBIOS was when I wrote to one of the Devs
asking about progress. It sounded like they still have the same probs with
cuda and other things. You see, the big "it's impossible to emulate a
PowerPC" - thing
is gone. It's solved and it get's harder and harder to motivate people to
work
on this project.

I'm working at Cologne at the moment, so I won't be able to even read my
code
until I'm back home around 6th of december. OS X was the biggest interest
people
had in PearPC and since Intel-iBooks are shipping in early 2006, expect the
project
to go even slower :)

I for one will continue to write for PearPC but that highly depends on my
free time
and that is none at the moment.

I've been out of reach of an Intel machine for a few months now, so I
can't even RUN the latest version of PearPC from CVS.

I'm one of the devs that was going to start some work on OpenBIOS
integration but I packed up my home and went out on a project for
real money a while back :) and I won't be able to get back to
OpenBIOS until maybe February now.

OpenBIOS on PearPC is more a novelty than a necessity, and, don't get
me wrong here, I want to get it working and available for use but
it's not holding anything back at the moment on PearPC. It would be
useful for people experimenting with non-standard OS's on PPC and
using PearPC as their emulation platform for doing so. This is a
limited crowd, in my opinion.

We're fine, thanks for asking ;-)

Unfortunately I still have no docs on getting the keyboard controller to

roughly it's mostly a matter of plugging things together in the right
order.

There also needs to be an NVRAM driver.

And some patches to pearpc for simple serial support, and PCI access.
I've been using a really old source tree from Daniel F. to test this
as he did the changes but back then said something like it might need
more work to get things up and running with the latest Pearpc versions.

Also, there's an issue tracker for OpenBIOS available at:
https://openbios.org/roundup/openbios
It contains a list of issues/problems/bugs/features needed for future
OpenBIOS releases. I want to encourage people to use it.

I think that it shouldn't be too hard to rewrite the code and such,
and get it setup to work through a socket/device file rather than
through STDIN and STDOUT.

This should allow one to use things like minicom or other standardized
serial device tools.

Ordering these in order of importance to get in:

Highest priority, as in let's really try and get these in there:
* 2nd IDE controller
* CRC32 patch

Somethings that it would definitely be good to get in:
* Network scripts patch
* Change CD fix for win32

Things that people are really looking for, but there is generally a
concern that they may not be the best approach:
* Sparse disk support

Something that's likely trivial to add, but there's a question as to
if it's necessary:
* Sad Mac (to make crashes that slight bit more user friendly ;))

In some ways it's frustrating that people get so worked up over a
name, and an official stamp... it's not like the PearPC team has a
rigorous testing harness to verify our code or anything... so reall,
the only difference between the pre's out there and the eventual 0.4
is just us saying, "hey, let's call it 0.4 now, instead of just
0.4pre."

Something that might be helpful, and wouldn't take too much time (just some
thinking, and typing) would be to outline a raodmap for where development
should head. Something I've noticed is that the main developers don't have
too much time, and the people who are learning, or thinking about developing
don't have a real direction. having a roadmap (or even a simple, "These
should be done soon" to-do list) would be a good idea, that way when people
ask, "When's the next release?", you can say "When we finish #5, 7, and 9 on
the roadmap. Feel free to help out."

That's just my $.02. Releases aren't important to programmers, or
developers. They're important to users, and to the over all life of a
project. If you don't release often, people don't come to check you out as
often. I'm guilty of that with many projects, even though I'm a developer on
a few others. Sometimes the illusion of activity is more beneficial to a
project than actual activity. All that being said.. I can't wait till PearPC
gets to some of those wonderful points we've been hearing about for the last
year or so. If I knew enough about the problems, I'd surely help out.

Well, that's about all I can think of, besides, "Kudos on the new release!"

perhaps merging the project with openbios will be really good, i mean what
if we take it on BIOS level,
that means instead of emulating everything inside windows or Linux, PPC will
jump to DOS level, and then a menu from openbios can give a option to choose
real hardware or emulated PowerPC hardware (given from PPC project) ,

just a crappy idea, but will be great as on many machines with 256Mb ram and
1.X Ghz processor emulation is normally slow, but with this approach project
will be well suited to low speed processors, as well as will help PowerPC
architecture developers to develop platform specific features

Apple is porting itself to intel, i mean its already there as one can see on
OSX86 project but still all is not available in universal binaries, and many
programs crashes as well as, specially safari and need SSE3 or SSE2 Patch
plus a lot of tweaks and what about classic support which is only for Mac
architecture... as it has features inherited from Mac 8.X and 9.x., they are
still missing and will be missing till what i can think of

a smart implementation to merge openbios and PPC might give a new face to
PPC... this is just a idea...
i will also be interested to hear the roadmap

see ya

Regarding the upcoming 0.4 release and the search for patches
I'd like to mention this thread:

http://www.pearpc.net/viewtopic.php?sid=&f=10&t=4109

Somebody included DDC information in device descriptions of the gcard and
was
able to boot linux kernel 2.6 with it. It's a very small patch and does
not break anything as far as I know, but I did not test it with a 2.6 kernel
since I don't have it here. Maybe somebody could have a look ?

not break anything as far as I know, but I did not test it with a 2.6 kernel
since I don't have it here. Maybe somebody could have a look ?

* 2nd IDE controller
Unfortunately the patch is really a mess. It isn't cleaned up, full of
wrong line endings (this would be the smallest problem) and duplicates
the whole code for the 2nd controller.

Re: OpenBIOS and the CUDA problem,

I read something interesting on some website a couple weeks ago. My iMac has what is called a PMU (power management unit) instead of a CUDA. The several websites I was researching at the time made the impression that the PMU is not the same thing as the CUDA was, even though it perform many of the CUDA's functions. My iMac is 5 years old now, so it not something new. Maybe someone who knows more about this than I do can look into it. Hope this helps if not sorry for wasting space and time.

Thanks
Ryan Hennessee
